Based on Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System, it turns out that higher education in Indonesia is classified into 3 types, namely Academic Education, Vocational Education, and Professional/Specialist Education.
Academic Education is a higher education system that leads to the mastery and development of certain scientific, technological and artistic disciplines. Academic Education includes Bachelor (S1), Masters or Master (S2) and Doctoral (S3) Education programs. Graduates of Academic Education will receive a Bachelor's degree, followed by their area of expertise. For example, Bachelor of Economics (SE), Bachelor of Law (SH), and so on.
Vocational Education is a higher education system that leads to the mastery of certain applied skills. Vocational Education includes Diploma I (D1), Diploma II (D2), Diploma III (D3) and Diploma IV (D4) Education programs. Vocational Education graduates will receive Vocational degrees, for example Primary Expert (A.P.), Junior Expert (A.Ma), Associate Expert (A.Md.) and so on.
Meanwhile, Professional/Specialist Education is a higher education system that can only be taken after completing an Undergraduate Education program to be able to master the specific skill sets needed to try out relevant professions. Graduates of Professional/Specialist Education will receive a Professional Degree in accordance with their respective fields of Education.
