Based on Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System, it turns out that higher education in Indonesia is classified into 3 types, namely Academic Education, Vocational Education, and Professional/Specialist Education.
Academic education is a higher education system that leads to the mastery and development of certain scientific, technological and artistic disciplines. Academic education includes Bachelor's (S1), Master's or Master's (S2) and Doctoral (S3) education programs. Academic education graduates will receive a Bachelor's degree, followed by their field of expertise. For example, Bachelor of Economics (SE), Bachelor of Law (SH), and so on.
Vocational education is a higher education system that leads to the mastery of certain applied skills. Vocational education includes Diploma I (D1), Diploma II (D2), Diploma III (D3) and Diploma IV (D4) education programs. Vocational Education graduates will receive a Vocational title, for example Primary Expert (A.P.), Junior Expert (A.Ma), Intermediate Expert (A.Md.) and so on.
Meanwhile, Professional/Specialist Education is a higher education system that can only be taken after completing a Bachelor's Education program to be able to master the specific skill set needed to try out the relevant profession. Professional/Specialist Education graduates will receive a Professional Degree appropriate to their respective field of education.
